Should I stay or should I go now?

Deciding whether to stay in your current role or take the leap into something new can feel like standing at a crossroads with no clear signposts. It’s a big decision—and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. After all, your career isn’t just about your earnings; it’s about how your work fits into your life and aligns with who you are.

When weighing up your options, it’s helpful to break things down into key areas: skills and interests, values, environment, and lifestyle match. A career coach can help you navigate some of these issues but as a starting point it can be wise to consider:

1. Skills and Interests: Are You Thriving or Just Surviving?

Do you feel energised by the work you’re doing? Are your skills being utilised in a way that makes you feel competent and fulfilled? If your job allows you to use your strengths and gives you opportunities to grow in areas that excite you, that’s a good sign you’re in the right place.

On the other hand, if your daily tasks feel like an endless grind, or your interests have shifted, it might be time to explore a role that better aligns with your evolving passions.

2. Values: Does Your Work Align With What Matters Most?

Your values are the compass guiding your decisions. Whether it’s integrity, creativity, making a difference, or financial security, your work environment should reflect and support these priorities.

If there’s a disconnect between your values and the company’s culture or mission, it can lead to frustration and dissatisfaction over time. Ask yourself: Am I proud to be part of this organisation? Does my work contribute to something meaningful?

3. Environment: The Boss, Culture, and Day-to-Day Dynamics

Your workplace environment plays a huge role in your overall job satisfaction. Consider the culture: Is it collaborative, competitive, or somewhere in between? Does it suit your personality and working style?

Think about your boss, too. A boss that matches your particular needs can often be the make or break in job satisfaction.  Some people thrive when working closely with their boss whilst others find it suffocating and need freedom of thought and action.

4. Lifestyle Match: Is This Job Supporting Your Life Outside Work?

Your job is just one part of your life. Does it support your lifestyle? Consider factors like work-life balance, flexibility, and commute time. If your role consistently leaves you drained or prevents you from pursuing personal interests or spending time with loved ones, it might be time to reassess.

What Else Should You Consider?

Sometimes, it’s not just about what’s happening now but also about the future. Reflect on:

  • Opportunities for growth: Can you see a clear path forward in your current role – can you see development opportunities that will enhance your enjoyment and future employability?

  • Financial considerations: Will a move improve or compromise your financial stability?

  • External factors: Are there personal circumstances—like family commitments or health—that might influence your decision?

Lastly, trust your instincts. If you’ve been contemplating a move for a while, there’s likely a reason.

Making the Decision

If you’re still on the fence, start by making a pros-and-cons list for both staying and leaving. Seek advice from mentors, friends, but importantly a career coach can help you gain fresh perspectives.

Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The key is finding the path that aligns best with your unique skills, interests, values, and life goals and importantly aligns where you are in your life right now. Whether you decide to stay and reinvest in your current role or take the leap into something new, know that the right decision will ultimately be the one that feels true to you.
